In 2009 Tim and Cathy completed a beautiful green extension to their Victorian terraced home. Inspired by a post and beam construction and a traditional Japanese style of building, the extension required no planning permission and used no concrete in its construction, instead using steel screw piles to support the structure.

They have maximised natural light entering the space using large double and triple glazed glass panels and doors, and have warmed the space by using reclaimed oak floorboards and wooden panelling throughout.

key features include:

  • Green oak frame
  • Rubber roof with green roof covering
  • Steel screw piles to support structure - both removable and reusable - avoiding need for concrete underpinning
  • Triple glazed roof
  • Double glazed and recycled glass windows
  • Drylining insulation
  • Underfloor heating and floor insulation
